I remember that one and seeing that video.

There was some discussion in a topic over on the Dungeon Master forums: in Planet Explorer a while back. This was also back when Rasmus was just beginning development of Dwelvers, which was then called Dwelvers.

I am definitely looking forward to when Rasmus can get back to this project.

My vision was to make a interstellar Minecraft Tongue
The player should start at the ground with nothing, then chop down some trees, build himself a hut, defend himself against enemies. Then chop down some other stuff and increase his technology so that he could make a car, then a plane, then a spacecraft and travel to other planets and civilize them Wink Maybe even other solar systems..

Ahh, this only makes me think of the old Elite game on the Amiga Tongue

Yeah, I remember them, mostly Frontier Elite 2 though as that's the one I played. The one thing I wish I could have done with that game is go off to the unexplored systems and been the first to explore them, but sadly I never could get that far out before my ship would start breaking down and force me back to an earlier save before I went all the way out of the inhabited systems.

That's one thing I'm looking forward to when Dwelvers is done, it you're getting back to this project and getting it done too. By then you should have a budget and a development team payed for out of your Dwelvers profits... and hopefully no deals with SMP-like companies to tarnish anything for you next time around. Smile

Yeah. I remember the discussions about both that and then Dwelvers on that forum last spring. Yeah, that old topic burningpet found predates this forum by a few months.

Makes me think of X Beyond the Frontier for some reason.

For me that game idea brought back memories of the classic Frontier Elite 2. I'd love to see a game similar to that but modernized with better graphics and smoother controls.

I used to play Spore quite a bit a few years ago, I did enjoy the game for the most part, but towards the end started running into game breaking bugs that would make it impossible to advance to the next stage, like, for example, getting to the civilization stage and being one city short of what's needed to win that stage, or getting to the space stage and not having the alien ship that's needed to complete the first mission and get the ability to travel to other stars. That sort of thing. Still, I did have a great deal of fun in the creature creator making all sorts of crazy creatures.

My biggest issue with Spore was all the security loopholes it introduced into the computer. I'm curious though, what was this game going to be, and do you think you'll return to it after Dwelvers, Rasmus?

Well, there was some discussion about it in this thread over on the Dungeon Master forum. He sounded a bit ambivalent to doing this project but the response on that forum from the members seemed to me overwhelmingly in favor of him continuing Planet Explorer after he'd done Dwelvers.

Yeah, it's a great idea. Makes me think of Sim City, but on steroids. It would be cool to have something like this where you start out low tech, have to build up a civilization, keep that civilization from being destroyed by others on the planet, and progress through the technology levels to the point you are spreading your civilization to the stars. I hope you pick this back up Rasmus, because I think you may find some of those hurdles you were having then with it are not that big of a deal with all the progress you have made in developing Dwelvers.

It is not impossible that I will go back to this in the future. But I think there is a reason why not many games are made like this. It is very hard to modify terrain in a good way that are generated like this.
