As for smelters etc... requiring additional tiles for access, there should be a marker sort of like the warcraft 3 one that indicates that the side back and or front need to be accessed for the device...

The efficiency with which the imps act will be greatly increased and can fluctuate based on need. I really like the way the system is set up to encompass this in a simple manner.

An alert horn or bell would make sense here too and could be manned by an imp. It would auto-set the rally point to the special rally building in the same room as the bell.
