Feedback/Modification Creature Mechanic - Selecting creatures when trying to dig
#1
Whenever I mark a block to be dug, if there's a creature under the mouse pointer when I release it, that creature's info box comes up.

This is specially annoying when you are starting a new map, as all the creatures are cramped together and all you can do is to dig.

In my humble opinion, there should be an IF clause that checks if some blocks where marked for digging, and THEN don't open any creatures info box.

Yeah, this one has been buggin me too. Just been puttin up with it since I figured it was a tiny issue compared to some of the other things pre 0.9c.

Yeah, that can be a hassle at times to me as well. Maybe a keystroke could be added that would IGNORE any creatures near the cursor while it's pressed? Like, holding down SHIFT while clicking areas/spots? That way, you have that option if you need to use it or the area is cluttered up or busy. XD

Or heck, maybe even a button in the GUI you can toggle on/off? That might be going overboard with it though haha.

Hmm, shift and control is already used for selecting creatures, and the default action is both digging and selecting so I can't exclude one of them. Something to think about...

Ahh, thinking... I figure it would be best (if this was made a feature) to use a key near the left hand, since the right hand is occupied with the mouse.

I later thought on it and realized that most of us wouldn't want to have to hold any key down while moving and digging, that would prolly be a pain to do.

Instead, a keystroke hit once would turn [IGNORE CREATURES] ON and OFF. Could even have an icon displayed somewhere to show the player if creatures can be selected or not, kinda like a MODE yer in.

How about the TILDE key? ~

On the steam forums was mention of removing the shovel thing. What if the function was just changed instead. For something like this.

A way to turn on/off what type of selection method would be priority. Default could be mining, while the alternate would be on creature selection.

This was something I noticed with my 1 hour play last night that really was quite tedious to say the least. Got me thinking when about that specific steam post of talking about pick/shovel switch. Since there is really not much difference in either, mind as well use it for something else more useful. Well that would be the idea anyhow, whether it would be practical or not; I am unsure. But possibly viable maybe?

After all if you can toggle your task like that, then it might make selecting unit to see info and digging more simple to do; if not less of a tedium. Just an idea I had to be a possible thing for this very topic.

That way the icon can clearly show what selection method it is on. Of course the graphic for the shovel might need to be changed to represent it; at least that part I would think be the easiest to do. Any thoughts?

Hmm, I am not that happy about using a toggle command for this because I feel like it could be confusing unless it is really shown for the player what is going on and what the space button does.

Another solution is that I came to think about that the ctrl button is used for deselecting creatures, what if the ctrl button could force the digging action if no de-selectable creatures are inside the clicking area?

Sooo... While holding the ctrl then? Hmm... That might work, especially if the toggle isn't preferred. I can see the point, as that would be tricky to make it obvious. Well it was an idea though, but any way to be able to focus on digging will be best. Might even work better with the ctrl working that way, assuming creatures are not selected first.

Haven't had a chance yet to mess around with the selecting multiple units yet, although I think I kind of did by accident once. I only know because of the selection bracket that showed up at the same time I was outlining a dig. That was a lot of right clicking. Glad you can disperse the info box with that. There was just a lot of imps around there since I was outlining strips one at a time.

Anyway I think that would work.Smile

Thinking further on this, we want to minimize the amount of different keystrokes we have to use as well right?

What if, we just change the SPACEBAR to have these 2 modes? [EXCLUSIVE PICKAXE/SHOVEL -> NORMAL PICKAXE/SHOVEL]

Maybe combining the PICKAXE and SHOVEL into the same mode and they can/will automatically use the correct tool for the job at hand (THE PUN THERE hahaha) which keeps us at 2 MODES.

EXCLUSIVE PICKAXE/SHOVEL mode will NOT select creatures AT ALL.
NORMAL PICKAXE/SHOVEL mode can/will select creatures if they're nearby, like it is now.

The pickaxe / shovel will be removed as the shovel isn't useful anymore. http://steamcommunity.com/app/276870/dis...186776008/

So I had to set the space button as a "force dig" option. The reason was the when the ctrl key is used it is set to deselect creatures, and that deactivate the dig option because when dragging the hand over a group of creatures I don't want areas to be dug out.

That's good... It is what I thought might happen if set to that key... Space is best since it is not used elsewhere far as I know. Easily accessible.Smile

Space is used to switch between shovel and pickaxe, but that's about to get removed.

That is the reason I can see it being a good thing, like replacing the function of space; since that feature is going to be removed anyway. Mind as well use it for something right? Especially for this since it is a pretty large and press-able key, and to designate dig areas is something done a lot in the game.Smile

I have to agree that this is very annoying.

Could you not set 'Select' and 'Dig' as options on the right click radial menu? So that what you choose from the radial menu determines what mode you are in for left clicking?
